This part of the center showcases the spectacular urban changes that have come about over the course of just five decades, transforming Roquetas from a small town into a city. The developments in terms of the region’s infrastructure, facilities, and urban landscape over the last 50 years and the rate of growth and urban transformation are spectacular, with aggregated agriculture, tourism, fishing, and residential expansion
This space shows us the makeup of the population. Roquetas de Mar is currently the second largest municipality in the province, after the city of Almería, having more than 110,000 registered inhabitants. The unique multicultural composition of the city’s citizens deserves special mention. The foreign population in Roquetas de Mar represents 32% of total inhabitants; that is, three times the Spanish average. In addition, foreign residents come from 102 different nationalities and more than 50% are from outside the current European Union. According to some analysts, Roquetas de Mar currently has the social structure that much of Europe will have in 40 years, giving it a uniqueness that makes it an urban laboratory of extraordinary interest.
